Traveling is expensive, and that’s no secret. It’s especially expensive for a family. When you add in the cost of airlines tickets, hotel stays, transportation, food, fun activities, and souvenirs, the costs can add up very quickly to where a vacation within the USA can add up to almost $10,000 or a vacation to Europe can easily add up to almost $15,000 for a family of four.

What if you could have one of the major expenses removed such as the airlines tickets? Well, there is a way to do that. In many cases, the airline ticket can be almost half of the cost of the vacation, so if you can get your airline tickets for free, you are basically getting a 50% discount on your trip.

Delta Skymiles American Express Card

All major airlines offer a credit card that will allow you to earn miles as you spend money on it. Delta Airlines is no different. Today I am focusing on the Delta Airlines credit card, because in my opinion Delta Airlines is one of the best airlines to fly in the USA as far as reliability and service.

The Delta Skymiles credit card is offered through American Express (we’ll call it Amex for short going forward), and the card can be used anywhere that accepts Amex cards. When you pay for items using your Delta Skymiles card, you earn a mile for each dollar you spend with any merchant. You earn 2 miles for each dollar you spend on Delta Airline purchases, whether those be airline tickets, paying for additional luggage, buying food for purchase on the airplane, and more from

How to Build Miles Quickly

One concern I hear from a lot of people is that it takes too long to build up enough miles to travel. The price of an airline ticket when paying in miles is 16,000 miles at the low end for your shorter cheaper flights, and over 100,000 miles for international trips and first class seats. So, when one realizes they have to spend $16,000 in order to get 16,000 miles, they get nervous. That is a lot of money to spend, so let me explain how you would do it.

Use your Skymiles American Express card on everything you can. Obviously there are some merchants who don’t accept Amex and there isn’t much you can do about that. However, most merchants today do accept them. In order to avoid going into deep debt, try not to spend more money than you have in your bank account, and when the monthly credit card statement comes out, pay your credit card bill in full each month, this way you avoid paying interest and you will earn miles each month.

Delta Skymiles Shopping

On top of building miles through using your Skymiles card as often as possible, you can also visit the Skymiles shopping mall online and they are partnered with almost all the major retail shopping stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, Children’s Place, and a lot more. For example, if you need to buy a new laptop, instead of running to your local Best Buy or Staples, you can log into your Skymiles shopping page and click on Best Buy and buy the computer through Skymiles shopping.

Stores through Skymiles shopping allow to earn between 1 and 5 miles per dollar your spend. Let’s say that Best Buy at the moment offers only 2 miles per dollar spent. Let ‘s say your laptop purchase is $1000. You would earn 2000 miles for that purchase, and if you make the purchase with your Delta Skymiles card, you will earn another 1000 miles, so a $1000 purchase can earn you 3000 miles. If you would have driven to a Best Buy store, you would have only earned 1000 miles.

Delta Skymiles Dining

This is very much like Skymiles shopping, but with restaurants instead of retail stores. You can earn between 1 and 5 miles per dollar spent at local restaurants. If you and a loved one go out to dinner to one of the restaurants listed in Skymiles Dining, and let’s say a particular restaurant allows you to earn 3 miles per $ spent there and you spend $50 for the two of you. You will earn $50 x 3, which is 150 miles, plus you if you use your Skymiles Amex card, you will earn another 50 miles for a total of 200 miles.

Delta Partners

You can also earn miles through Delta Partners. They have quite a few of them, so I won’t list them all hear, but you can literally book an entire vacation through Delta Airlines’ website. You can rent cars, book hotel rooms, and book cruises all through Delta’s website and you earn miles when you do it. On top of that, you can bundle all these services and get a discount through Delta Vacations! Instead of going to Expedia or Travelocity to book a hotel room, do it all through Delta’s website and build your miles very fast!

Introductory Bonus Miles

Most of the time when you apply for the Delta Skymiles card, if you are approved you will earn a set of bonus miles. Usually you have to spend a minimum amount of money on the card in a limited time such as needing to spend $3,000 in the first 3 months your card is opened. When you spend that money within that allotment of time, you may earn from 30,000 miles to 60,000 miles. This bonus amount does change frequently, so be sure to check here to see where it’s currently at or to make sure they are currently offering bonus miles.

I would say the only cons to the Delta Skymiles American Express and with any airline card is that you are going into credit card debt and that scares a lot of people. I advise always paying your card off in full each month and making sure to not spend more than you have in your bank account. Another con is that the reward mileage thresholds can be high depending on when you travel. Sometimes you have to be flexible on your travel dates to get the best deal.

Overall, my personal rating for the Delta Skymiles American Express card is 9.2 out of 10.  It is worth getting if you plan on traveling on a regular basis.  If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below.  Otherwise apply now if you are ready to start traveling.
